The Newborn Brain Society is pleased to announce that the 2026 Honorary Fellow Award has been awarded to Steven Miller, MDCM, FRCPC, FRSC, FCAHS.
This distinction recognizes individuals who have made outstanding and sustained contributions to the field of neonatal and perinatal neuroscience, advancing both scientific discovery and clinical care for newborns and their families worldwide.
Dr. Miller is Head and Professor of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of British Columbia and Chief of Pediatric Medicine at BC Children’s Hospital. He holds the Hudson Family Hospital Chair in Pediatric Medicine as well as the James & Annabel McCreary Chair in Pediatrics. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, reflecting his significant national and international impact on child health research and leadership.
A neonatal neurologist by training, Dr. Miller’s research has fundamentally advanced understanding of how early-life intensive care experiences influence brain development. Through pioneering neuroimaging studies in critically ill newborns, his work has helped reveal how neonatal intensive care can shape developmental trajectories across childhood. His research program focuses on infants born preterm and those with congenital heart disease, with the goal of identifying strategies to prevent brain injury and support neurodevelopmental recovery.
Beyond his scientific contributions, Dr. Miller has played a central role in advancing the field through mentorship, leadership, and collaboration. He is deeply committed to supporting the next generation of child-health researchers and has held prominent leadership roles, including President of the Society for Pediatric Research and Council member of the American Pediatric Society.
Dr. Miller’s influence extends well beyond academia and clinical research. He is widely regarded as a dedicated mentor, thoughtful collaborator, and trusted leader within the global neonatal and pediatric neuroscience community. His work continues to shape how clinicians and scientists understand early brain development and how care is delivered to some of the most vulnerable newborns.
The Newborn Brain Society is honored to recognize Dr. Miller’s extraordinary contributions with the 2026 Honorary Fellow Award.
