Newborn Brain Society

Gabriel F. T. Variane, MD, PhD

President

President-elect

Dr. Gabriel F. T. Variane is a neonatologist and physician-scientist focused on neonatal neurocritical care, digital health, and artificial intelligence. He completed his medical training and PhD at Santa Casa de São Paulo, Brazil, and undertook international clinical observerships at McGill University, Canada, the University of Cambridge, UK, and Stanford University, USA. He currently serves as Medical Director of the Neonatal Neurocritical Care Program at Santa Casa de São Paulo.

In 2016, Dr. Variane founded Protecting Brains & Saving Futures (PBSF), a nationwide initiative dedicated to advancing neuroprotection and brain monitoring for newborns at risk of brain injury. Through PBSF, he has led the development and implementation of AI-enabled digital health solutions for neonatal care, integrating remote neuromonitoring, cloud computing, multimodal data analysis, and immersive technologies to provide real-time support to more than 60 hospitals. In collaboration with Microsoft and other partners, PBSF has become a large-scale platform for education, clinical support, and innovation in neonatal neurocritical care.

Dr. Variane’s research focuses on the application of digital health technologies, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, multimodal aEEG/EEG and NIRS monitoring, vital signs integration, cloud-based systems, and immersive reality, to better understand neonatal brain activity, perfusion, and physiology in critically ill infants. His work aims to translate advanced digital technologies into practical strategies for early detection, decision support, neuroprotection, and improved outcomes in newborns. He currently collaborates in several studies with the Neonatal Neurocritical Care team at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, Stanford University. Dr. Variane is a co-founder of the Newborn Brain Society and currently serves as President.
